Nestled in the heart of Topeka, 785 Kitchen stands out as a soulful takeout restaurant that brings authentic Southern and soul food flavors to the forefront. Located at 2028 SW Gage Blvd, this local gem is a haven for anyone yearning for the comforting tastes of classic, home-style cooking crafted with care and passion.
The menu is a celebration of Southern staples that evoke memories of family dinners and hearty, soulful indulgences. Signature dishes like the perfectly seasoned Country Fried Steak and the tender, flavorful Ox Tails (available Fridays only) truly showcase the chef’s commitment to authenticity. Diners rave about the Chicken and Beef Sausage Gumbo, a rich, spicy stew bursting with bold flavors—a standout offering that perfectly balances spice and savor.
Equally noteworthy are the vibrant, comforting sides that elevate each meal. The Greens and Cornbread duo is a must-try, with the greens expertly cooked until tender and the cornbread boasting a moist, buttery crumb that pairs beautifully. The Fried Okra—available both classic and buffalo-style—is praised by patrons for its crispy coating and addictive flavor. Other comforting sides like Mashed Potato with White Gravy, Red Beans and Rice, and creamy Mac & Cheese round out the menu, each dish prepared to bring that genuine "from grandma’s kitchen" vibe.
Dessert lovers will find themselves blissfully satisfied with the array of gooey cakes—whether original, strawberry, or butter pecan—each delivering a luscious cream cheese center wrapped in a decadently soft cake crust. The Sweet Potato Pie and Banana Pudding Cups are perfect sweet finishes that evoke the warm nostalgia of southern homesteads.
What truly sets 785 Kitchen apart is the warmth and dedication embedded in its service. Multiple customers highlight the professionalism and care of the kitchen team, especially Mr. Jackson—the chef behind these authentic flavors—who goes above and beyond to ensure each order is fresh, hot, and satisfying. One glowing review details how the team even went out of their way to source extra salmon to fulfill a large group’s order, underscoring their commitment to customer satisfaction.
While the focus here is unequivocally on the food, the atmosphere is casual and unpretentious, typical of a carryout spot. It’s all about the food that speaks for itself, without fuss or pretense. The honest, soulful cooking shines through every bite, making any wait more than worthwhile. Whether you’re craving crispy Chicken Fried Chicken, the best jerk chicken around, or that rich, spicy gumbo, 785 Kitchen delivers with every plate.
If you’re in Topeka and searching for soul food that’s bursting with flavor and crafted with genuine care, 785 Kitchen is your go-to destination. The love for Southern cooking is evident, and every dish tells a story of tradition, heart, and delicious mastery that leaves guests eager to return again and again.
Mr. Jackson was a very professional chef with awesome food. We had both pork chop types seared. and the fried both were delicious and try the Buffalo oakra. Also the greens were delicious!
We absolutely love this place - highly recommend! When we’re in town, we typically have a large order (7-8people) and they always do their best to accommodate. Last night, they only had enough salmon for one order but volunteered to go out and buy more salmon for us. Everything was prepared fresh and hot! We had a little bit of a wait (1hr+) but that was for 7 dinners and it was worth it. Everyone loved their meal. We appreciate the staff who cooked and prepped everything. We will definitely be back!
Absolutely 5 stars!!!! OMG wow! This is the best tasting soul food in Topeka! Giving The Catch vibes for real! The chicken fried chicken is the bomb! Mashed potatoes and yams and the greens!!! Yes! Yes! Yes!!!! Cornbread yes!!! Everything was just like Grandma made it! Trust and believe!
This place was amazing. We live in Wichita and we might have to swing through Topeka next time we go to KC. It’s that good. Best Jerk Chicken I’ve ever had. The Mac & cheese was over the top cheesy. Gumbo spiced just right. Hub got the chicken fried steak and loved it. Go! This chef is just starting out and he’s GOOD.
It's definitely a carry-out restaurant, so don't expect much with the mismatched chairs. Crispy okra, gumbo had lots of variety, beans and rice were not anything special, and the Rasta Pasta was plentiful but needed something to make it unique. I swear I had a home made roll! Corn muffins could have been from scratch but weren't.
Good food, the meatloaf dinner was more than great, it was amazing. Service was fast. the cashier was friendly and prompt. The cook brought our food to the table. And said hello and welcomed us. This I enjoyed. Could have used a little more than a can to drink, but that would be my fault. I believe I also had orka. It was done perfect . Cool place I will go back again.
We got the oxtail special and the smothered chicken special. Everything was really good! Both of the meats were spoon tender, the rice was the bomb, and the sides were fire! Friendly folks and great prices as well, we will be back!
Came across 785 Kitchen in Topeka. We didn't get their until 3:30PM & were sold out of many of the dishes. I got the Chicken Fried Steak, fries, fried okra & corn bread & for desert a big serving of Red Velvet cake. Everything was delicious. The owner & staff were the best. I've never been treated better. When we got ready to leave I discovered my keys were locked in my car. They had us come in & wait for AAA to come unlock my car. It took another hour for that. They were so gracious. Nicest people ever & great food.
